In roulette, the winning number is determined by which numbered pocket the roulette ball might land in. There are two main kinds of roulette bets; outside bets, and inside bets. Outside bets are the kinds of bets made on a range of numbers, on whether or not the ball will land on an odd or even number, or on whether or not the ball will land in a black or red pocket. On the other hand, an inside bet is when a person bets on a single number, a small range of numbers based on position. The possibility of winning on an outside bet is much higher than if a person wagers their money on an inside bet. This is why most of the time, the payoff for an inside bet is much larger than if a person makes an outside bet.
There are many different kinds inside and outside bets. To keep track of who has made a bet or how much has been wagered, there is a roulette table, where the numbers on the roulette wheel are arranged in numerical order, in three columns of twelve. On the roulette table, the different kinds of bets that are frequently used when playing roulette are also presented. Often, there is a separate table for inside and outside bets.
One kind of inside bet is the Straight Up bet, where a person simply wagers on a single number. Another is the Split, where a person chooses two numbers that have been positioned next to one another, horizontally or vertically, on the roulette table. A Street bet is when a person bets on a horizontal row of three numbers. A Corner bet, or Square bet, on the other hand, is when a person bets on four immediately adjoining numbers. In European roulette, a Trio is when a person bets on zero, and one and two; in the American version of this game, a Trio can also mean a bet placed on the double zero, and two and three. The last kind of bet, the Six Line, is when a person puts their money on six numbers arranged like two Streets.
Among the outside bets, there is the Eighteen to One bet, the Nineteen to Thirty-six bet, the Red or Black bet, the Odd or Even bet, the Dozen bet, and the Column bet. The names of outside bets are fairly self-explanatory. The Dozen bet involves betting on groups of twelve numbers; such as one to twelve, thirteen to twenty-four, or twenty-five to thirty-six. The Column bet is much like the Dozen bet, except that the winning number is stipulated to be among the numbers in a chosen "column" of twelve numbers, as printed on the roulette table.
